James Gunn has been hired back by Disney to direct Guardians of the Galaxy 3. He is the only Marvel director to finish a trilogy of superhero movies in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Guardians of the Galaxy 3 was supposed to release in 2020 however after Disney fired James Gunn over a set of controversial tweets, the movie was delayed to 2021. Since then, the fate of the franchise was uncertain but this seems to have ended today after Disney is bringing back James Gunn.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 will be the third movie in the series that was supposedly set after the events of Avengers: Endgame. It would have introduced more cosmic Marvel elements to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The story and details around this sequel are under wraps for now but Adam Warlock was one of the rumored characters in the movie.
James Gunn started to work for Warner Bros. and DC and was slated to direct Suicide Squad 2 for them. Disney has reportedly agreed to let him complete his work on Suicide Squad 2 before getting back to direct Guardians of the Galaxy 3.
James Gunn shared a thank you note on Twitter after the news of him getting back to direct Guardians of the Galaxy 3 made it out online.

He had already apologized for his controversial tweets when they resurfaced in the summer last year but Disney still decided to let him go. Their u-turn shouldn’t be surprising since Gunn has contributed a lot to Marvel Cinematic Universe with the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise becoming one of their tentpoles.
