A recent rumor suggests that Warner Bros. Interactive and NetherRealm Studios have decided to cancel the release of Kombat Pack 3 and a new story expansion for Mortal Kombat 1. It appears that NetherRealm Studios’ latest expansion, Khaos Reigns, did not perform well in sales, which has resulted in the discontinuation of future content for the game.
This report comes from a reputable leaker who previously shared accurate post-launch content information, including leaking Kombat Pack fighters. Verified on the Mortal Kombat leaks subreddit, they replied to a post about the possibility of Kombat Pack 3, stating that it won’t happen.
In another comment, they confirmed NetherRealm Studios was planning another story expansion along with Kombat Pack 3, but due to poor sales, these plans have been shelved.
“Kombat Pack 3 and a second story expansion were planned. All canceled recently. No more characters after Kombat Pack 2. A kameo or two might still be released since some work has been done on them, but I don’t know yet, ” said the leaker.
Khaos Reigns continues the story of Mortal Kombat 1, offering 4 to 5 hours of new content and introducing six new fighters: Ghost Face, Noob, Sektor, Cyrax, Conan, and the T-1000. This is in addition to Kombat Pack 1, which featured Omni-Man, Quan-Chi, Peacemaker, Ermac, Homelander, and Takeda.
Mortal Kombat games typically receive post-launch support through DLC fighters. For Mortal Kombat X and XI, this included new characters and guest fighters. Mortal Kombat XI was the first in the franchise to feature a post-launch story expansion. While Mortal Kombat 1 initially had strong sales, poor post-launch support has hindered its success. Released a few months ago, Khaos Reigns hasn’t made a significant impact.
Mortal Kombat 1 is available on PS5, PC, Xbox Series S|X, and Nintendo Switch. It was developed by NetherRealm Studios and published by Warner Bros. Interactive.
