Santa Monica Studio’s new IP is likely the project that Cory Barlog has been working on. Meanwhile, it appears that a new God of War title is also in development in parallel at the studio, possibly directed by God of War Ragnarok director Eric Williams. According to an earlier job listing for the position of Combat Designer, developer Santa Monica Studio was looking to recruit someone with knowledge of God of War (2018) and God of War Ragnarok (2022) combat systems, mechanics and enemies for the development of an unannounced title.
The individual hired was to be responsible for creating high level character design intent and combat flow plans, implementing character animation and behavior via state machines, behavior trees, visual effects, sound effects and various other scripting systems, iteratively working within the set standard for all character asset design, creation, and in-game implementation within the production path as it relates to design, art and otherwise, valuing the relationship between gameplay elements within the level and the overall game and all the ways the player can respond to each gameplay element, and more.
