PS5 System Update Adds Audio Focus and Classic Console UI Themes Starting April 24

Sony Interactive Entertainment has officially unveiled the latest PlayStation 5 system software update, which introduces two major features aimed at enhancing accessibility and user customization. This PS5 update will be deployed globally in a phased rollout starting April 24, and is a direct response to longstanding community feedback. The two headline additions include a new audio enhancement feature called “Audio Focus” and the return of classic PlayStation console designs as UI themes for the PS5 interface.

The new Audio Focus feature is specifically designed to improve in-game audio clarity for users who play with headphones or headsets connected through USB or analog jacks. With a focus on immersion and accessibility, the feature introduces a set of audio presets that boost specific sound frequencies based on player preferences. Users will be able to amplify various sound categories such as low-pitch rumbling, high-pitched footsteps, character dialogue, and quiet ambient sounds. Each preset includes three levels of intensity—Weak, Medium, and Strong—and allows for independent left/right channel control. However, this feature will not be available for TVs, soundbars, or AV receivers through HDMI outputs.

Alongside audio enhancements, Sony is bringing back the classic console UI customizations that were temporarily available during PlayStation’s 30th anniversary celebration. This update allows players to modify the appearance of the PS5 home screen to reflect the visual styles of the original PlayStation, PlayStation 2, PlayStation 3, and PlayStation 4 consoles. The new customization options, accessible through the “Appearance” menu under system settings, offer a nostalgic aesthetic for long-time PlayStation fans and allow greater personalization of the PS5 interface.

Key Features Introduced in PS5 April 24 Update:

  • Audio Focus:
    • Enables audio frequency boosting for immersive sound clarity.
    • Four preset modes: Boost Low Pitch, Boost Voices, Boost High Pitch, Boost Quiet Sounds.
    • Each mode supports three intensity levels: Weak, Medium, Strong.
    • Individual left/right channel tuning supported.
    • Available only through headphones connected via USB or analog jack.
  • Classic Console UI Customization:
    • Returns the visual themes of PS1, PS2, PS3, and PS4 to the PS5 interface.
    • Available under the new “Appearance” section in the Settings menu.
    • A response to popular demand following a limited-time anniversary event.

This update marks a significant step in PlayStation’s ongoing efforts to enhance user experience through personalization and inclusive design. Sony has invited the community to share feedback on these features as part of its broader initiative to shape the PS5 platform around user preferences.
