Bungie could be facing a significant round of layoffs this summer, according to claims made by French journalist Sylvain Trinel.
In a post shared on X, Trinel said he has heard reports that at least half of Bungie’s workforce, including both permanent employees and contractors, could be affected by upcoming cuts.
“And if that weren’t enough, Bungie should expect massive layoffs this summer,” Trinel wrote. “I’m treading carefully, but I’m hearing talk of at least 50% of the workforce affected (permanent or contract staff) following the end of Destiny 2 and the situation with Marathon.”
The last publicly reported employee count for Bungie was approximately 800 staff members. If the reported figure proves accurate, it could result in around 400 positions being eliminated, reducing the studio’s size considerably.
The report follows a series of recent comments from Trinel regarding broader concerns across the video game industry. Earlier, the journalist claimed that layoffs are expected at several major studios and publishers, describing the situation as the beginning of a wider industry downturn.
“What’s happening with Microsoft is just the beginning of a massive bloodbath for studios owned by publishers,” Trinel said previously. “Don’t Nod, Quantic Dream, but also a lot of layoffs expected in many very well-known studios. It’s going to be a catastrophe.”
Trinel also suggested that conditions at several other prominent studios warrant attention, including id Software, Bethesda Game Studios, and BioWare.
Regarding Sony-owned studios, the journalist had previously been asked whether the performance of titles such as Marathon and Saros could affect Bungie and Housemarque. At the time, he pointed toward July as a period to watch, though he did not specifically confirm which studios might be impacted.
