Nintendo legend Shigeru Miyamoto has shared new comments regarding the future of the Super Mario franchise, stating that he is excited to see how Nintendo approaches the next mainline Mario title following the success of Super Mario Odyssey.
The comments were reportedly published in a special Mario 40th Anniversary issue of Casa BRUTUS and later highlighted online by Nintendeal.
“With the achievement of Super Mario Odyssey, I think we’ve gotten everything we wanted out of the Switch system,” Miyamoto said. “Up to now we’ve released new [Mario] titles with the advent of each console; I’m excited to see how the current team will handle that.”
Miyamoto’s remarks have already fueled speculation surrounding Nintendo’s next major 3D Mario project as the company transitions into the Nintendo Switch 2 era.
The original Nintendo Switch generation became one of the strongest periods in franchise history, delivering major releases across multiple Mario sub-series. Super Mario Odyssey, released in 2017, was widely praised for its large-scale sandbox design and creative gameplay systems, becoming one of the platform’s defining exclusives.
Nintendo later expanded the franchise further through titles such as Super Mario Maker 2, Super Mario Bros. Wonder, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, and Super Mario Party Jamboree, alongside remakes and RPG revivals including Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door.
With Nintendo Switch 2 now in its first year, reports and industry speculation have increasingly pointed toward a new flagship 3D Mario title currently being developed internally at Nintendo. While the company has yet to officially announce a successor to Super Mario Odyssey, many expect the project to become one of the Switch 2’s biggest first-party releases in the coming years.
