Subnautica On PS5 Gets The Most Drastic File Size Reduction Compared To PS4

Subnautica on PS5 is finally out with an update released yesterday and the impact on the file size of the game is huge thanks to the new compression.

When Subnautica launched for the PS4, it had a file size of just 6-7 GB. Since releasing on the console, it continued to get new updates that added to the file size. The cumulative update size ballooned to more than 7 GB and the final file size was calculated at 14 GB.

After the PS5 version was released in the form of an update, the file size of the game has been drastically reduced, more than 70% from its original size. The file size on PS5 is just 3.5 GB. There is no patch released for the game but considering this version includes any of the post-launch content and fixes from the PS4, it is unlikely that the game will be updated with a massive patch.

We have previously reported on how the game sizes are smaller on PS5 compared to the PS4 but this is a rather extreme example with a reduction of more than 70%. It is also a testament to the new compression technique employed in the PS5 which could make it unlikely to see more games with ridiculous file sizes. There are still a few of them, especially those who use pre-rendered cutscenes.

If we had to bet, the upcoming Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade might hit 100 GB file size since it is full of pre-rendered cutscenes, but in any case, other games that use real-time cutscenes like Ratchet and Clank Rift Apart do offer a modest file size.
