Nintendo Switch 2 demand in Japan continues to surge ahead of Nintendo’s upcoming hardware price increase, with one of the country’s largest electronics retailers reportedly selling out of the system entirely.
According to posts shared by Genki_JPN on X, Yodobashi Camera’s Akihabara location has now run out of Switch 2 stock. Store signage reportedly states that the next restock date is currently undecided.
“Switch 2 is sold out at one of Japan’s largest retailers, Yodobashi Camera in Akihabara!” Genki wrote. “People are rushing to buy Switch 2 like crazy before the price goes up on May 25 in Japan.”
The latest reports follow several days of heavy consumer demand across Japanese retailers as buyers attempt to purchase the console before Nintendo’s scheduled price adjustment later this month.
Earlier reports showed long lines forming outside stores including Yodobashi Camera Umeda, where social media users claimed around 300 people were waiting to purchase the system. Other retailers have reportedly begun implementing restrictions to manage demand and reduce reseller activity.
Industry analyst Dr. Serkan Toto previously revealed that Bic Camera locations in Japan had started limiting Switch 2 purchases to customers using the retailer’s branded credit card system. According to Toto, similar restrictions were also extended to the Nintendo Switch OLED Model, standard Switch, and Switch Lite.
Nintendo recently confirmed that the Nintendo Switch 2 Japanese Language System will increase in price from ¥49,980 to ¥59,980 beginning May 25, 2026.
The company also announced separate price increases for the US, Canada, and Europe starting September 1, 2026, citing changing market conditions and long-term business considerations.
The ongoing shortages and retail restrictions suggest that demand for current pricing remains extremely high across Japan, with consumers rushing to secure hardware before the increases take effect.
