The latest entry in Bandai Namco’s Tekken fighting game series, Tekken 8, will support crossplay between PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC, and the game’s launch roster is set to surpass that of Street Fighter 6.

The Game Director and Chief Producer of the Tekken series, Katsuhiro Harada, took to Twitter to reveal that Tekken 8 will support crossplay between PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC, and that the game’s launch roster will feature “a lot more” characters than that of Street Fighter 6.

Harada stated that when the previous generation consoles were released, he had proposed crossplay to the higher ups at PlayStation and Xbox. However, at the time, neither was interested in the feature over concerns related to business interests as well as P2P security issues. Therefore, his request for crossplay was repeatedly denied by both console makers. However, things are different in the current landscape, and Tekken 8 will indeed support crossplay on all available platforms.

Regarding the launch roster, Harada said that Tekken 8 will have “a lot more” characters at launch compared to Street Fighter 6. He pointed out that all the assets in the game, including character modeling, rigging, and costume design, are brand new and not re-used from earlier titles. He said that, while all of this is hard work, the development team is trying to deliver a higher number of characters at the game’s launch compared to previous entries in the Tekken series.

The Tekken producer, Katsuhiro Harada, has previously stated that he is currently working on multiple new projects, including Tekken 8. Japanese publication 4Gamer asked a number of game creators involved in the production of popular games about their aspirations for the year 2023. In his response, Harada stated that he is currently involved in the development of multiple titles, one of which is the recently announced Tekken 8.
