Owlcat Games has confirmed that The Expanse: Osiris Reborn will recast the voices for its male protagonist and companion character J following player feedback gathered during the game’s recent beta test.
In a new development update, the studio revealed that more than 7,000 players completed beta surveys over the past month, while additional feedback was collected through bug reports, telemetry data, social media discussions, and community suggestions.
According to Owlcat Games, the beta received strong praise for its visuals, combat, EVA sequences, soundtrack, and the atmosphere of the Pinkwater 4 station setting. However, players also highlighted several areas that required improvement, particularly surrounding voice acting and character presentation.
The studio specifically acknowledged criticism directed at the performances of the male protagonist and J. While Owlcat said both actors delivered “a lot of good work,” the developer admitted the performances ultimately felt less expressive than intended. As a result, the studio confirmed that both characters are being recast ahead of release.
Beyond the voice changes, Owlcat stated that its development team is continuing work on facial animations and body movement systems to improve overall character realism and presentation.
The update also addressed complaints about repetitive combat dialogue, particularly J’s frequent battle cries. According to the developer, the game’s “ask” system was still unfinished during the beta phase, and a larger rework had already been planned internally before player feedback arrived.
Narrative tone was another area discussed in the update. Owlcat explained that while the game’s overall tone remains an intentional creative decision, community feedback helped identify moments where certain character reactions felt inconsistent or unnatural. The studio says several conversations and interactions are now being adjusted to improve dialogue flow and character responses.
Gameplay systems are also receiving additional polish. Owlcat confirmed that the cover system is currently being refined to make interactions more intuitive and responsive during combat encounters, with further improvements planned before launch.
The studio added that these changes represent only part of the adjustments currently in development based on player feedback. Owlcat said it plans to share more updates on The Expanse: Osiris Reborn in the future as development progresses.
