CD Projekt Red has shared the first concrete details regarding Songs of the Past, the newly announced third expansion for The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. During a recent livestream celebrating the 10th anniversary of Blood and Wine, the studio confirmed that the expansion is currently in development alongside Fool’s Theory and is scheduled to launch in 2027 for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S.
Addressing the announcement, the studio thanked fans for their reaction, saying, “We just wanted to say a really heartfelt thank you to everyone after the announcement of Songs of the Past yesterday. We have been inundated in the best way possible with questions and a lot of really lovely messages from everybody.” It was also clarified that the anniversary stream would not feature new footage, stating, “Today we will not be showing you anything new for Songs of the Past. We’re here to celebrate a decade of Blood and Wine.”
Later in the stream, the team officially reiterated the project’s confirmation, saying, “As you guys know, and you saw it online yesterday, but if you haven’t, pay attention because yes, we are officially working on the third expansion. It’s called Songs of the Past.” They added, “We’re co-developing that with our friends from Fool’s Theory,” before confirming, “It’s releasing next year 2027 and it’s coming to PlayStation 5, Xbox Series S and X, and PCs.”
While CD Projekt Red stopped short of revealing massive plot details, the studio did tease that fans may already have clues about the expansion: “As a few eagle-eyed people have already seen over the last 24 hours, there are some hints for you waiting on a very important evening in Witcher, Belleteyn night, in our Belleteyn celebration that we shared a few weeks ago.” They added, “So, keep looking for clues. Maybe they missed something. Who knows?”
One of the biggest reveals concerned the expansion’s scope. When discussing how large Songs of the Past would be, the studio responded, “Songs of the Past will be aligned with what you’re familiar with with Blood and Wine and what you’ve come to experience and expect from us when we do our expansions.” They emphasized, “It’s an expansion pack. It’s an expansion.” The team reinforced that comparison, explaining that iconic projects such as Hearts of Stone, Blood and Wine, and Phantom Liberty are treated “almost like separate games” because the team wants to create “a new adventure.”
The developers also confirmed that Gwent will receive additional content in the expansion. Responding to a fan question about new cards, the team joked, “Guys, Witcher 3 equals Gwent,” before giving a direct answer: “More Gwent coming. Simple as that.”
Another fan question focused on promotional artwork showing Geralt carrying three swords. The team confirmed the extra weapon, noting, “Geralt is holding a sword.” They then chimed in on its significance, adding, “It is a very important sword for the story and you will get to know it once the game is out.”
Looking ahead, CD Projekt Red said fans will not have to wait too long for another update, confirming that “More information about Songs of the Past will be coming in the late summer,” while also revealing, “You will be seeing more of the expansion at Gamescom this year at the entertainment area.” The studio additionally reiterated that cross-platform mod support for The Witcher 3 remains a high priority alongside the expansion’s rollout.
