Xbox Reportedly Debating Future of Exclusivity Strategy Amid Internal Discussions

by Salal Awan

Microsoft’s Xbox division is reportedly engaged in significant internal discussions regarding the future of its exclusivity strategy, as the company weighs its identity between platform holder and publisher.

Speaking on the XB2 podcast, Windows Central editor Jez Corden indicated that the debate is ongoing and substantial. He said, “You know I said they were thinking about adjusting Game Pass, there’s a very very very big discussion about the exclusivity stuff going on right now internally.”

Corden suggested that Microsoft is aware of the importance of exclusives but is still determining its long-term direction. “I think they do recognise the value, you know, it’s just what type of company do you want to be at the end of the day. Do you want to be an ecosystem company first or do you want to be a publisher company first,” he explained.

The discussion appears to center on whether Xbox can effectively balance both approaches. According to Corden, attempting to do so may lead to compromises on the hardware side. “You can’t do both well, either the hardware operation will shrink to basically what Surface is now, a shadow of its former self, not its death bed, do you really want that for your Xbox brand,” he said.

He also pointed to Xbox’s broader role within Microsoft, noting its value beyond gaming hardware. Referring to internal sentiment, Corden added that Xbox remains a key consumer-facing brand, stating that “when I meet with a lot of executives they don’t want to talk about cloud, they want to talk about Xbox, they want to talk about Halo they want to talk about Xbox games, it’s where you reach your consumers when they’re not working.”

While no official changes have been announced, the reported discussions suggest Xbox is at a strategic crossroads, with exclusivity once again becoming a central question for the brand’s future.
