Did the Chrono Trigger Creator Just Confirm a Remake by Accident?

by Salal Awan

Fans of the legendary JRPG Chrono Trigger may finally have a reason to celebrate, as a potential remake of the classic title appears to have been inadvertently confirmed by series co-creator Yuji Horii. This revelation reportedly occurred during an interview segment at the recent Comicon event in Naples, Italy, where Horii was a guest.

According to multiple eyewitness accounts shared on Reddit, Horii may have let slip the existence of a Chrono Trigger remake during a live panel. A post by user df_tarocco_1 recounted that after the interviewer whispered something to Horii, the veteran developer covered his mouth—a gesture many interpreted as a reaction to having said something prematurely. The moment reportedly drew an enthusiastic response from the crowd, suggesting it was seen as a significant reveal.

Further corroboration came from Reddit user TheFishyOne, who confirmed being present at the event. They stated that Horii mentioned something closely matching the claim of a remake before the translator attempted to backtrack with a humorous remark: “You have heard nothing.” This only fueled speculation that the mention was indeed unintentional but truthful.

While Square Enix has not issued any official statement as of this writing, the timing and context of this apparent leak are notable. The company has steadily revisited many of its classic franchises in recent years, often employing its HD-2D visual engine. This engine, used successfully in titles such as Live A Live, Octopath Traveler, and Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake, preserves the nostalgic pixel-art aesthetic while modernizing the presentation for contemporary platforms.

Originally released in 1995 for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System, Chrono Trigger is widely revered for its innovative gameplay, emotive storytelling, and multiple endings. The game is a product of an all-star development team, including Dragon Quest creator Yuji Horii, Final Fantasy mastermind Hironobu Sakaguchi, and legendary manga artist Akira Toriyama. Despite its modest commercial performance at launch, Chrono Trigger gained massive critical acclaim and has since become a cult classic among JRPG fans.

Given Square Enix’s trend of revisiting its legacy titles and the legacy status of Chrono Trigger in particular, the use of the HD-2D engine seems plausible for a potential remake. However, until an official announcement is made, this remains speculative, albeit strongly supported by eyewitness testimony from the Naples event.
