Dynasty Warriors: Origins draws its inspiration from the Chinese historical novel Romance of the Three Kingdoms. According to Director Tomohiko Sho, the game focuses solely on the first half of the novel. The gameplay combines classic hack-and-slash mechanics with strategic elements. Players control a primary character while issuing commands to allied troops on the battlefield. In addition to the protagonist, players can choose a secondary general to accompany them during battles.
