Square Enix’s upcoming action role-playing game, Final Fantasy VII Revelation, will feature the same level cap as the 1997 original.
During an interview with Everyeye.it (via Genki_JPN on Twitter/X), Final Fantasy VII Remake trilogy director Naoki Hamaguchi revealed that Final Fantasy VII Revelation will have the same level cap as the 1997 classic, allowing players to reach a max level of 99. “Another thing I wanted to add is that in Remake and Rebirth there was a level cap, but in Revelation we will not have a level limit: players will be able to reach level 99.”
Hamaguchi explained that the third and final installment will place a greater emphasis on endgame progression and post-story content than prior entries. While both Final Fantasy VII Remake and Final Fantasy VII Rebirth encouraged players to replay the game on Hard Mode after finishing the main campaign, the approach will be different in the trilogy’s finale. “Instead of pushing the player to restart the game on hard mode, Revelation will encourage them to complete all the remaining content on the world map after finishing the main story,” he said. He added that players will face powerful optional challenges, including the Weapons and even tougher enemies.
The return of the classic level cap is part of a wider effort to pay homage to the original Final Fantasy VII. The Final Fantasy VII Remake trilogy director confirmed that the Weapons will be integrated in a manner similar to the 1997 original, with some appearing during the main story while others will serve as optional encounters scattered throughout the world map. Several of these battles are expected to rank among the toughest challenges in the game.
Hamaguchi described Final Fantasy VII Revelation as the largest and most ambitious world in the trilogy. The new game will build upon Rebirth’s interconnected regions, allowing players to explore planet Gaia on a much larger scale through the Highwind airship, improved Chocobos, and expanded verticality.
