Gears of War: E-Day Campaign Confirmed to Exceed 14 Hours, Longest in The Coalition’s History

The Coalition has revealed new details about Gears of War: E-Day, confirming that the upcoming prequel will feature the studio’s longest single-player campaign to date.

Speaking to IGN in a group interview, creative director Matt Searcy, brand director Nicole Fawcette, and art director Aryan Hanbeck shared several new details about the game’s structure and gameplay. According to Searcy, the campaign will run for more than 14 hours, making it “longer than any campaign [The Coalition has] built.”

The extended runtime will be accompanied by an increased emphasis on collectibles. Searcy noted that E-Day contains more collectibles than any previous campaign developed by the studio, including the return of the series’ iconic COG Tags.

The interview also shed light on some of the game’s new mechanics. While Gears of War: E-Day introduces jumping for the first time in the franchise, Searcy stressed that the game is not becoming a platformer. Players will not be required to traverse levels through extensive jumping sequences. Instead, the mechanic is primarily intended to provide access to new routes and flanking opportunities during combat encounters.

Although the campaign remains largely linear, some missions will feature larger areas that encourage exploration. These expanded spaces are designed to give players more freedom in how they approach objectives while also offering additional opportunities to learn about Bravo Squad and its members.

Fawcette also confirmed that all four members of Bravo Squad will be playable from the start of the game. Players will not be restricted to controlling Marcus Fenix throughout the campaign, allowing different perspectives on the events of Emergence Day.

Gears of War: E-Day is scheduled to launch on October 6, 2026 for Xbox Series X|S and Windows PC. Developed by The Coalition in partnership with People Can Fly, the game serves as a prequel to the original Gears of War and takes place 14 years before the events of the 2006 classic.

The story follows younger versions of Marcus Fenix and Dominic Santiago as they fight for survival during Emergence Day, the catastrophic moment when the Locust Horde erupted from beneath the surface of Sera and plunged humanity into chaos. With a longer campaign, larger environments, and new gameplay options, E-Day appears set to offer one of the most expansive single-player experiences in the series to date.
