As the God of War franchise nears its 20th anniversary, speculation about a remastered version of the original games continues to grow. Industry insider Jeff Grubb has hinted that an announcement related to a God of War remaster could happen in March, coinciding with the franchise’s milestone celebration. Grubb made this statement in response to a post on BlueSky, where an artist mentioned working on a piece for the upcoming anniversary event. His comment—”I think that those God of War remaster rumors just jumped the gun a little bit. That stuff will happen closer to this”—suggests that an official reveal is on the horizon.
The possibility of a God of War remaster has been a hot topic for a while. A recent report from the Insider Gaming Weekly podcast added fuel to these rumors. Henderson, who initially speculated that the next entry in the series might be set in Egypt, later corrected his claim, citing a source who stated that the game will return to Greece and focus on Kratos’ younger years and his relationship with Zeus. This has led to speculation that the upcoming game could be a prequel or a soft reboot, possibly tied to the rumored remastered collection.
Adding weight to these claims, Chinese insider Lunatic Ignus previously stated that Nixxes Software is working on a full remastered edition of the God of War Greek Saga. According to Ignus, this collection will include all the Greek mythology titles from the franchise—God of War, God of War II, God of War III, God of War: Chains of Olympus, God of War: Ghost of Sparta, and God of War: Ascension. They also claimed that this remastered collection is set to be unveiled in March 2025 as part of the 20th-anniversary celebrations.
The God of War series was rebooted in 2018, taking Kratos into Norse mythology. The reboot was a critical and commercial success, leading to a sequel released in 2022. While the series was essentially rebooted, the narrative remained connected, with Kratos returning in the new games, albeit in a different mythology. If the new rumor is true, Sony might be bringing back the Greek saga games in a remastered package for modern consoles, as they are currently limited to PS3, PSP, and PS4.
