A remake of Mafia 2 and a sequel to Mafia: The Old Country may currently be in early development at Hangar 13.
According to content creator Mafia Game Videos, whose analysis is based on developer interviews and production clues, there is reason to believe that a Mafia 2 and a sequel to Mafia: The Old Country may be in early development. In a 2025 interview, game director Alex Cox described The Old Country as a “soft reboot,” suggesting the beginning of a new series. Rather than continuing directly from Mafia 3, the studio is focusing on smaller-scale, narrative-driven experiences similar in structure to Mafia and Mafia 2.
The aforementioned strategy is in line with recent comments from Take-Two Interactive CEO Strauss Zelnick, who highlighted strong demand for cinematic, story-focused games.
Meanwhile, speculation regarding a Mafia 2 remake largely stems from subtle details in developer materials. In a behind-the-scenes developer diary, Hangar 13 was shown recording audio for World War II-era weapons such as the M1 Garand and M1 Carbine, both prominently featured in the 2010 original. These weapons would be historically out of place in The Old Country, which is set in early 1900s Sicily. This suggests that the studio may be preparing assets for a remake using Unreal Engine 5 in order to give it the Mafia: Definitive Edition treatment for modern platforms. Futhermore, the addition of weapons from Mafia 2 via loyalty rewards in Mafia: The Old Country may have served as early testing for how legacy content performs in the new engine.
Going by the available details, below is a potential roadmap for developer Hangar 13.
- Next Project: A direct sequel to The Old Country
- Mid-Term: Expansion into later time periods (1920s to 1930s)
- Long-Term: A full Mafia 2 remake leveraging shared assets
This gradual progression would allow the studio to reuse environments and technology efficiently, reducing development costs and risks.
