Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls Has A Very Poor Retail Launch In Japan

Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls has reportedly suffered a very weak retail launch in Japan, with fewer than 3,000 physical copies sold during its first week. The figure, reported by Game Data Library, makes it the weakest Japanese launch for an Arc System Works fighting game outside of particularly niche releases such as DNF Duel.

The result puts Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls behind most of the developer’s Guilty Gear and BlazBlue games, as well as Under Night In-Birth. Game Data Library also noted that the figure is well below the performance of previous Marvel vs. Capcom titles, with the physical version of Marvel Fighting Collection alone selling more than twice as many copies.

The outlet initially considered 10,000 units to be a pessimistic estimate, but the reported result is significantly lower even when accounting for the possibility of digital sales. Game Data Library said that even assuming digital purchases represented around 70% of total sales, the overall result would still be lacklustre.

Developed by Arc System Works and published by Sony Interactive Entertainment, Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls launched on August 6, 2026, for PC and PlayStation 5. The 2.5D fighter features Marvel characters in 4v4 tag battles, combining assist mechanics with more accessible systems such as auto-combos.

The game’s PC launch also delivered a stronger result on Steam, where it reached roughly 24,500 to 25,000 concurrent players. However, that peak remained below the more than 33,000 players recorded during its open beta in late July, with launch-day performance problems and optimisation complaints affecting the initial release before subsequent patches addressed some of those issues.

The weak Japanese retail performance is particularly notable given the game’s Marvel branding and Arc System Works’ history with major fighting game franchises. However, the reported physical figure does not account for digital sales, meaning it does not represent the game’s complete sales performance in Japan.
