4A Games has officially unveiled Metro 2039, the next mainline entry in its long-running post-apocalyptic shooter series. The game is set to launch this winter for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via Steam and Epic Games Store.
The announcement was accompanied by a 15-minute showcase, featuring developer interviews, a reveal trailer, and an early look at gameplay. The footage highlights the series’ signature blend of narrative-driven design, tense first-person combat, and atmospheric worldbuilding. According to the studio, the new installment continues to emphasize a handcrafted single-player experience, with a strong focus on psychological horror and immersive environments.
Set in the year 2039, the story takes place deep beneath Moscow, where survivors of nuclear devastation have spent decades living within the Metro tunnels. In this chapter, the various underground factions have been unified under a single authority known as the Novoreich, led by a figure referred to as the Fuhrer, Hunter. While the regime promises a return to life on the surface, the reality within the tunnels is defined by control, propaganda, and continued suffering.
Players take on the role of The Stranger, a solitary character plagued by recurring nightmares who is drawn back into the Metro despite a desire to leave it behind. Unlike previous entries, the protagonist will be fully voiced, marking a shift toward more direct storytelling and character-driven immersion.
4A Games has also emphasized the context behind the project’s development. With roots in Ukraine, the studio notes that real-world events have influenced the narrative direction of Metro 2039, placing greater weight on themes such as consequence, survival, and the cost of securing a future. Development is currently being led across teams based in Kyiv and Malta.
While gameplay details remain limited, early footage suggests a continuation of familiar mechanics, including the use of signature weapons and equipment, alongside encounters with hostile creatures in tightly designed environments. Metro 2039 appears to build on the foundations of previous entries while pushing further into darker, more psychological territory.
More details on the game are expected in the lead-up to its release later this year.
