Microsoft has confirmed that Fable, the highly anticipated reboot of the classic RPG series, will now launch in 2026 instead of its previously announced 2025 release window. The news was shared by Craig Duncan, Studio Head at Rare, during a recent Xbox podcast where he expressed confidence in Playground Games and the progress they have made on the project.
“So, I just want to start with really excited, really excited about progress, really excited where Playground are, ” says Duncan. “We previously announced the date for Fable as 2025, we are actually going to give Fable more time and it’s going to ship in 2026 now. While I know that’s not maybe the news people want to hear, what I want to assure people of is that it’s definitely worth the wait. And I just, I have unequivocal confidence in the Playground team.”
Duncan reassured fans that the additional development time will lead to a more polished and refined experience. He emphasized that the delay is in the best interest of both the game and the players. He highlighted Playground Games’ impressive track record, especially with the critically acclaimed Forza Horizon series, and stated that the team’s vision for Fable will provide stunning visuals, engaging gameplay, and the franchise’s signature British humor.
Duncan, who has played portions of the game, described his experience as highly immersive, praising the seamless transition between cinematics and gameplay. He also reiterated that everything shown so far is fully playable, reinforcing the studio’s commitment to delivering a high-quality title.
Fable is a reimagining of the beloved RPG franchise, set in the mythical land of Albion. Developed by Playground Games and published by Xbox Game Studios, it marks the first new entry in the series since Fable: The Journey in 2012. The game has been in development for several years, with its existence first rumored in 2017 before being officially announced during the Xbox Games Showcase in 2020.
Fable is set to launch exclusively on Xbox Series X|S and PC in 2026.
