A new report claims id Software has already entered the early stages of developing a new DOOM game, despite the studio being affected by Microsoft’s recent Xbox layoffs.
The latest update comes from The Verge editor Tom Warren, who said, “while the id layoffs have been deep, I understand the changes haven’t turned id into a support studio. Instead, they’re now in the early stages of a new Doom game.”
The claim follows earlier reporting from Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier, who said ZeniMax would continue developing several of its major franchises despite the restructuring. According to Schreier, “ZeniMax will be impacted significantly by the reorganization but will NOT be reduced to only Fallout and The Elder Scrolls, despite rumors over the last few weeks. The publisher will also still work on Wolfenstein, Doom and Quake.”
The reports align with a recent statement from id Software following the Xbox layoffs. Addressing concerns about the studio’s future, id said: “Thank you all for the support this week. While our studio was impacted, those changes were spread across teams. We still have the crew we need to build the games and tech we’re known for. The team today is about the same size we were when making DOOM (2016).”
Microsoft’s July 2026 restructuring resulted in widespread job cuts across its gaming division, including at id Software. However, based on the latest reports and the studio’s own comments, id Software appears to remain focused on developing its own games and technology rather than shifting to a support role, with a new DOOM project reportedly now in early development.
