Nintendo Switch 2 Rumored To Begin Mass Production In The Coming Quarter

The Nintendo Switch successor, dubbed Switch 2, is set to begin mass production during the coming quarter, based on the latest rumor.

During a briefing, the CEO of Weltrend, a semiconductor manufacturer in China, Lin Chongtao, shared his market outlook in the field of power management ICs. He said that, starting in the third quarter, orders for game consoles have begun to pick up, including the production and shipment of new models of PS5, Xbox, and Nintendo Switch (likely Switch 2).

Chongtao was very likely to be referring to Nintendo Switch 2, PS5 Pro, and the rumored new Xbox Series X model. Going by his mention of orders for game consoles beginning to pick up from the third quarter, the Switch 2 will likely enter mass production during September, 2024.

Weltrend is a supplier contracted by Nintendo to provide the Power Delivery Controller IC for the Nintendo Switch, and apparently also for its successor. It is an integrated chip responsible for managing communication and power control in systems that utilize the USB Power Delivery standard in the console.

Previously, it was revealed via a datamine of the exchange of data between Nintendo and NVIDIA that the Nintendo Switch 2 may come with a charger with 60W power. It is believed that this could allow for higher clock speeds and also improve the console’s charging capabilities to the “fast-speed” spec if it adopts the use of GaN technology. The use of the latter technology is vital in current chargers for cell phones and notebooks that ensure greater efficiency and speed with each charge. According to the source, the manufacturer that will provide the charger for the Nintendo Switch 2 will be Delta Electronics, the same supplier responsible for the version present in the existing Switch console.

Furthermore, the manufacturer data also contains hints regarding the presence of a new cooler in addition to the one already present in the console. It is smaller in size, and is believed to be part of the Nintendo Switch 2 dock, which would facilitate thermals of a more powerful charger.
