PS5 emulator development has picked up pace soon after Sony Interactive Entertainment announced its exit from the physical games market.
The development of a PS5 emulator appears to have become a priority for emulation enthusiasts soon after Sony Interactive Entertainment announced its exit from the physical games market. It also helps that the release of the juggernaut known as GTA VI is on the horizon, and the game not coming to PC anytime soon likely serves as a key motivation.
Emulation enthusiast iExplosiveRage took to Twitter/X to share footage of them trying to run the PS5 version of Demon’s Souls on PC via a new PS5 emulator called SharpEmu, They mentioned that it currently only shows the game’s startup screen, followed by a black screen. That said, the 2D adventure platformer Dreaming Sarah is able to get in-game, as seen in the video below.
The Twitter/X user also mentioned a second PS5 emulator by the name of KytyPS5, which has so far been able to boot up Silent Hill: The Short Message and get to the initial logo and the warning screen, as seen in the video below.
The individual cautioned, however, that those expecting either of the aforementioned emulators to be able to run GTA VI on their PCs via emulation at launch are only setting themselves up for disappointment, as development won’t be moving at a pace where something like that could be possible. They reminded that the emulators are in their early stages of development, and will, therefore, require a huge amount of effort and work just to have a less taxing 3D game get past the initial menus. That said, they expressed hope that Demon’s Souls may be able to get in-game after several months.
Earlier this month, Sony Interactive Entertainment announced that it will end physical disc production for all new PlayStation game releases beginning in January, 2028, a step that may have served as motivation for developers to accelerate work on a PS5 emulator.
