Fresh speculation about the future of older PlayStation franchises has surfaced after a known industry insider, NateTheHate, commented on rumors that Sony is potentially reviving dormant IPs.
The discussion began after SM VISION claimed that a new State of Play presentation would take place on May 24. Responding to the rumor, NateTheHate pointed out that May 24 falls on a Sunday, casting doubt on the specific date itself.
However, the conversation later shifted to reports that older PlayStation franchises might be returning. When asked directly about rumors involving properties such as MotorStorm, Sly Cooper, Ape Escape, and SOCOM, NateTheHate responded, “There is truth to Sony exploring & considering reviving some of their older, unused IPs.”
The insider did not provide further details regarding which franchises may currently be under consideration or whether any projects have entered active development.
The comments follow earlier claims made in a recent VGC Podcast episode, in which hosts Jordan Middler and Alex Donaldson discussed Sony’s rumored unannounced projects and release strategies.
Middler suggested that Sony has multiple projects being held back behind the scenes, potentially waiting until after Grand Theft Auto VI launches before being revealed. “Sony have good stuff that they’ve just not spoken about yet,” Middler said during the discussion, while also referencing older “catalog titles.”
Donaldson similarly claimed that publishers across the industry may be intentionally avoiding direct competition with Rockstar Games’ upcoming release window, which could eventually lead to a wave of announcements once GTA VI launches.
The VGC discussion also included brief references to older PlayStation properties. Middler mentioned that “there is an infamous thing happening somewhere else in PlayStation at the minute, not tied to them,” seemingly referring to a possible project connected to the Infamous franchise outside of Sucker Punch Productions.
Previous podcast discussions by Middler have also referenced franchises such as Ape Escape and Wipeout as potential candidates for revival.
