Capcom’s 2019 remake of its survival horror classic, Resident Evil 2, is now the highest selling game in the history of the franchise.
The list of Platinum titles produced by Capcom, which includes games that have sold over one million units, has been updated with the latest statistics, revealing that the Resident Evil 2 remake is now the highest selling game in the history of the series, with 12.6 million units sold. This is true as of June 30, 2023.
According to the publisher, sales of more than one million units is the generally accepted standard for a major hit in the home video game market. Since its inception, Capcom has created over 100 titles that have sold more than one million units. This Platinum Titles page in the Product Data section on the publisher’s website lists all of these aforementioned hit titles by sales volume, and includes box art, video, screenshots and other information about them.
As per the data, not only is the Resident Evil 2 remake best selling game in the Resident Evil franchise, it’s also the third highest selling Capcom game of all time, with 12.6 million copies sold as of June 30, 2023. It trails behind Monster Hunter World and Monster Hunter Rise, which have sold 19 million and 13.2 million copies, respectively.
Resident Evil 2 was initially released for PlayStation 4, Windows, and Xbox One in January 2019. Later, in June 2022, it expanded its reach to Amazon Luna, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S, and finally, in November 2022, a Nintendo Switch cloud version was introduced. Players assume the roles of two protagonists, Leon S. Kennedy, a rookie police officer, and Claire Redfield, a college student. Together, they navigate the nightmarish horrors of a zombie-infested Raccoon City and find a way to escape the impending doom. Capcom developed the game using the RE Engine, the same engine that powered Resident Evil 7: Biohazard.
