Sony Rolls Out PS5 VRR Update, Several PS5 Games Updated With Support

by Greg Martin

Sony has finally started to roll out a VRR update for the PS5 and several major PS5 games are being patched to support it.

In a blog post, Sony confirmed that beginning this week, the support for VRR will be enabled for several games. They have shared the following list on the PlayStation Blog.

  • Astro’s Playroom
  • Call of Duty: Vanguard
  • Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War
  • Deathloop
  • Destiny 2
  • Devil May Cry 5 Special Edition
  • DIRT 5
  • Godfall
  • Marvel’s Spider-Man Remastered
  • Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales
  • Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart
  • Resident Evil Village
  • Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands
  • Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six Siege
  • Tribes of Midgard

Some of these games are already updated e.g Marvel’s Spider-Man and Ratchet and Clank have received their VRR update for the PS5. This is a system-level feature that has to be activated in the OS settings while the game should also support it.

If your TV doesn’t support VRR then you won’t be able to use it. It requires a TV capable of 2.1 HDMI standard so most modern TVs should be able to handle it.

VRR or Variable Refresh Rate allows a game to run at an uncapped frame rate without any major stutter. It works only on supported displays so if a game has an uncapped frame rate and doesn’t manage to hit a consistent 60 or 120 FPS, it is still a much smoother experience than playing the game at 30 FPS.
