Sony and Firesprite have officially unveiled Until Dawn 2, a standalone sequel to the 2015 horror hit that is scheduled to launch on PlayStation 5 in 2027.
The newly announced title introduces an entirely new cast of characters, a fresh setting, and a separate story while retaining the choice-driven horror formula that defined the original game. Alongside the announcement, Firesprite released the first trailer, offering an early look at the sequel’s supernatural mystery and deadly threats.
This time, players will follow the members of Dead True, a popular paranormal investigation channel known more for staged scares than genuine encounters with the supernatural. Their luck changes after securing a deal with a major television network and traveling to an abandoned tropical island to film their first fully funded episode. What begins as an opportunity to grow their audience quickly turns into a fight for survival when the crew encounters real horrors hidden beneath the island’s picturesque exterior.
According to Firesprite, the island conceals dark secrets that stretch back centuries. As tensions within the group begin to surface, players must navigate both interpersonal conflicts and supernatural dangers while attempting to keep the crew alive until dawn.
The studio confirmed that player choice remains at the center of the experience. Decisions ranging from major life-or-death moments to smaller interactions between characters can have lasting consequences. Relationship management will play a larger role than before, with some story branches determined by how characters feel about one another. Firesprite says even seemingly minor choices can trigger a chain reaction through the game’s signature Butterfly Effect system.
Examples shown by the developer include deciding whether to rescue a trapped animal, maintaining a secret relationship despite the risks, or pushing fellow crew members into uncomfortable situations to create more compelling content. Each decision can alter relationships and potentially influence who survives the island’s horrors.
The reveal trailer also confirmed the return of Dr. Hill, the mysterious psychologist from the original Until Dawn. Actor Peter Stormare is reprising the role, though Firesprite has yet to reveal how the character fits into the new storyline.
Until Dawn 2 marks Firesprite’s first release since Horizon: Call of the Mountain. The developer says preserving the original game’s focus on character drama, difficult choices, and memorable horror moments has been a major priority throughout development.
Firesprite plans to share additional details on the story, gameplay systems, and new cast members in the months ahead as the game moves closer to its planned 2027 release on PlayStation 5.
