SEGA has filed a new trademark for an upcoming entry in Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio’s Yakuza series, titled Yakuza Wars.
The trademark for Yakuza Wars was filed by SEGA recently on July 26, 2024, and published today on August 5, 2024. At this point, there’s hardly any information available on the game. As such, it’s hard to say whether it will be a brand new entry, a spin-off, or a “Kiwami” remake.
In any case, a new Yakuza game set to be announced in the near future, and going by the title, it appears that a large-scale war is taking place between the different Yakuza clans. No information is available regarding the game’s protagonist or its storyline. It is likely being developed as a current-gen only title, and would therefore be available on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. With the success of Like A Dragon: Infinite Wealth, fans have been eagerly awaiting the arrival of the next entry in the series. It looks like SEGA may be delivering soon.
Previously, on the occasion of Famitsu’s annual year-end feature in which comments from game creators about their aspirations for the year 2024 were shared, Yakuza 8 director Masayoshi Yokoyama had stated that Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio has a major announcement in store for 2024. It looks like he was referring to Yakuza Wars.
The most recent entry in the Yakuza series, Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth, was released on January 26, 2024, for the PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Windows, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S. It is the ninth mainline entry in the Like a Dragon series, serving as a direct sequel to Yakuza: Like a Dragon (2020) and a spin-off of Like a Dragon Gaiden: The Man Who Erased His Name (2023). It features Ichiban Kasuga, the protagonist of Yakuza: Like a Dragon, and Kazuma Kiryu, the original series protagonist. The game is set in the franchise’s first-ever overseas locale, Hawaii, as well as familiar settings in Japan.
