Larian Studios’s latest role-playing game, Baldur’s Gate 3, is still planned for release on Xbox Series X|S this year in 2023.
Swen Vincke, the founder and CEO of Larian Studios, took to Twitter to reveal that the Xbox Series X|S versions of Baldur’s Gate 3 are actively being play tested, and still on schedule for release this year. He added that the studio will announce the exact release date once it’s sure development is done.
The Xbox version of Baldur’s Gate 3 was previously pushed to 2024 due to mandatory feature parity requirements for the Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S versions. The feature in question is split-screen multiplayer, which Larian Studios needed more time to get up and running on the less capable Xbox Series S. Microsoft stepped in and removed the requirement, making it possible for the development team to release the game on Xbox, with no split-screen at launch on the Xbox Series S. The game is now slated for release on Microsoft’s current-gen consoles this year in 2023.
Baldur’s Gate 3 is the third primary entry in the Baldur’s Gate series, which is based on the Dungeons & Dragons tabletop role-playing system. A portion of the game became available in early access for macOS, Windows, and Stadia on October 6, 2020. The full release for Windows occurred on August 3, 2023. The PlayStation 5 version was released on September 6, 2023, and the macOS version followed on September 22, 2023.
The game features both single-player and cooperative multiplayer modes. Players have the option to create one or more characters and assemble a party, which may include pre-generated characters, to progress through the game’s storyline. Additionally, players can choose to team up with others online, combining their characters to form a party. Baldur’s Gate 3 features a versatile quest system that offers multiple ways to solve most quests. Players have the freedom to eliminate almost any non-player character, regardless of their role in the storyline, while still being able to progress in the story.
