Capcom Clarifies It Won’t Use Generative AI In Creative Areas Of Game Development

Capcom has offered clarification regarding its recent announcement to use generative AI in future game projects, saying that the technology won’t have a role in creative areas of development.

During a Q&A session on the occasion of the company’s Fiscal Year 2025 financial results, Capcom was asked why it is using generative AI to improve the efficiency of routine tasks but not in creative areas of game development. In response, a company executive clarified that games must deliver an experience that exceeds users’ expectations first and foremost, and that the creativity at the core of such experiences should be handled by humans. As such, the publisher’s current policy is to use the technology to improve the efficiency of routine operations so that its developers can devote more time to creative tasks.

In a subsequent question, Capcom was asked about the extent to which generative AI is improving efficiency in the development process, where is it being used, and what challenges are involved. The executive responded by saying that the company is seeing a certain degree of effectiveness from the use of the technology for improving operational efficiency. It is actively incorporating generative AI into each stage of the development process and is making concrete advancements to fully implement it for some parts of production. However, the executive added that since game development is multifaceted and complex, Capcom expect it will take some time before it can quantitatively demonstrate improved efficiency.

Last month, during an interview, Capcom executives Shinichi Inoue and Kazuki Abe explained that the publisher’s current AI initiatives are focused primarily on reducing development burdens tied to routine production tasks rather than generating creative content itself. Inoue, VP of Game Development Platform and AI Solutions, said the company believes human creativity and “sensibility” remain irreplaceable within entertainment development despite rapid advancements in AI capabilities.
