Digimon Story: Time Stranger Demo Comparison Highlights Switch 2 Performance Mode Advantages

by Salal Awan

A new comparison of the Digimon Story: Time Stranger demo has shed more light on how the game performs across Nintendo platforms, highlighting the benefits of the Nintendo Switch 2 version over the original Switch release.

According to impressions from the demo, the Nintendo Switch version offers a solid experience and maintains good performance despite being limited to a single display mode. The Nintendo Switch 2 version, meanwhile, includes both Quality and Performance modes, giving players the option to prioritize either image quality or frame rate.

The most significant difference comes from the Switch 2 Performance Mode, which targets a locked 60 fps. Achieving the higher frame rate requires some visual compromises, including a lower resolution and reduced shadow quality compared to the Quality Mode. Even so, the mode provides noticeably smoother gameplay than the 30 fps options available elsewhere.

Bandai Namco previously confirmed that the Switch 2 Quality Mode runs at 3840×2160 while docked and 1920×1080 in handheld mode, with HDR support and a 30 fps cap. Performance Mode operates at 1920×1080 in both docked and handheld configurations and raises the frame rate target to 60 fps, although HDR support is removed.

The original Nintendo Switch version runs at 1920×1080 when docked and 1280×720 in handheld mode, with gameplay capped at 30 fps. Despite the hardware limitations, early impressions indicate that the version performs well and remains an enjoyable way to experience the game.

Developed by Media.Vision and published by Bandai Namco Entertainment, Digimon Story: Time Stranger launches for Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2 on July 10, 2026. The monster-taming RPG first released on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S in October 2025.
