Final Fantasy VII Revelation Announced as the Final Chapter of the Remake Trilogy

by Greg Martin

Square Enix has officially unveiled Final Fantasy VII Revelation, the third and concluding entry in the Final Fantasy VII Remake trilogy. Revealed during Summer Game Fest Live, the game is set to launch in Spring 2027 for PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch 2, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via Steam, Epic Games Store, and Xbox PC.

Serving as the finale to a project that began with Final Fantasy VII Remake in 2020, Revelation brings Cloud Strife’s journey to its conclusion as the fate of the planet hangs in the balance. With Sephiroth drawing closer to godhood and Meteor threatening total destruction, Cloud and his allies embark on a final mission to save their world. The story follows the group’s efforts aboard the iconic Highwind airship as they race against time to confront the growing threat and bring an end to a conflict that has defined the franchise for decades.

One of the game’s headline features is a fully explorable world that can be traversed freely using the Highwind. Players will be able to fly across the planet and parachute directly into locations, transitioning seamlessly from the skies to the ground. Square Enix says the planet itself is facing multiple simultaneous crises, allowing players to determine where to travel, which communities to assist, and the order in which key objectives are tackled. Decisions made throughout the adventure will also influence aspects of character storylines.

Combat continues to build upon the hybrid battle system introduced in the previous Remake entries. Players can switch between real-time action and Tactical Mode while commanding a growing roster of playable characters. Revelation introduces additional combat abilities and expands party options, giving players greater flexibility when building their preferred fighting style.

The reveal trailer and extended gameplay presentation also showcased several major locations that have been recreated for the new installment. Among them are the tropical Mideel archipelago, the nation of Wutai, and the frozen Northern Continent. The gameplay demonstration further confirmed Vincent Valentine and Cid Highwind as playable characters.

Vincent brings a combat style centered on rapid gunplay and powerful beast-like transformations, while Cid specializes in aggressive lance attacks that can quickly close distances or damage groups of enemies. The presentation also introduced the FITS system, a new progression mechanic that allows players to equip outfits granting unique abilities and combat styles inspired by classic Final Fantasy jobs such as Black Mage and Warrior.

Producer Yoshinori Kitase described Revelation as the culmination of both the Remake project and three decades of Final Fantasy VII history, while director Naoki Hamaguchi said the game’s central theme revolves around resolve as Cloud and his companions confront their convictions ahead of the final battle. Creative director Tetsuya Nomura added that the development team aimed to bring together the many stories and interpretations that have emerged from the broader Final Fantasy VII universe over the years, with Revelation serving as the point where those threads converge.

Ahead of the game’s release, Square Enix is encouraging players to experience or revisit the previous entries in the trilogy. Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade and Final Fantasy VII Rebirth are currently available on PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch 2, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. Both titles now include the recently introduced Streamlined Progression feature, which offers options such as unlimited HP and MP, a permanently full ATB gauge, and faster weapon ability acquisition for players who wish to focus more on the story.

The publisher also confirmed save data bonuses for returning players. Those with Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade save data will receive the Chocobo & Moogle Summon Materia in Revelation, while players with Final Fantasy VII Rebirth save data will unlock the Phoenix Summon Materia.

Final Fantasy VII Revelation launches in Spring 2027 for PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch 2, Xbox Series X|S, and PC, bringing the Final Fantasy VII Remake saga to its long-awaited conclusion during the 30th anniversary year of the original 1997 release.
