Microsoft Reportedly Used Senua Reveal to Attract Investor Interest in Ninja Theory

Microsoft reportedly included the reveal of Senua during the Xbox Games Showcase 2026 as part of an effort to generate investor interest in Ninja Theory while the studio’s future was already under review.

According to Game File’s Stephen Totilo, Microsoft had plans to sunset or separate from the Cambridge-based developer before the June 7 showcase, despite unveiling a new Hellblade project during the event.

“Most extraordinary, Ninja Theory even debuted a new game, a third Hellblade title called Senua, at the Xbox Game Showcase 2026 on June 7,” Totilo wrote. “By the time that game was revealed, Microsoft had already planned to sunset or split with the studio. The thinking was that the promise of a newly announced game would help draw investor interest in the studio, a source familiar with Microsoft’s plans told Game File (it’s unclear if anyone atop Ninja Theory was involved in this plan).”

The report follows earlier claims from Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier that several Xbox-owned studios are exploring ways to avoid closure. According to Bloomberg, Compulsion Games and Double Fine Productions have been engaged in discussions with Xbox about potentially spinning off from Microsoft’s gaming division.

Ninja Theory was also reportedly involved in similar talks, with Schreier stating that several other studios across Microsoft’s portfolio are facing uncertainty regarding their long-term future.

Bloomberg further reported that affected studios could be offered opportunities to regain independence through buyouts, although such arrangements may still lead to substantial job reductions. The report also claimed that employees at multiple studios have been informed of the situation and have been permitted to seek other employment opportunities while discussions continue.

Neither Microsoft nor Ninja Theory has publicly commented on the latest claims regarding the Senua reveal or the studio’s future.
