File sizes of games for the Nintendo Switch successor, Switch 2, appear relatively modest despite the leap to next-generation hardware.

The official Nintendo website in Japan has been updated with file sizes for some of the Nintendo Switch 2 games that will be available at launch. Despite the move to much more powerful hardware that is capable of rendering higher resolution textures and greater level of detail, the size of the upcoming console’s games appear to be relatively modest.

Nintendo Switch 2 File Sizes For Launch Titles

The file sizes for Nintendo Switch 2 launch titles can be seen below.

  • Mario Kart World: 23.4 GB
  • Donkey Kong Bananza: 10.0 GB
  • GameCube Nintendo Classics: 3.5 GB
  • Super Mario Jamboree Switch 2 Edition: 7.7 GB

For the sake of comparison, Super Mario Jamboree for the original Nintendo Switch has a file size of 5.3 GB, while the Nintendo Switch 2 Edition weighs in at 7.7 GB. Meanwhile, Mario Kart World, a game development from the ground up for the Switch 2 hardware, has a file size of 23.4 GB. This is a notable increase from the file size of Mario Kart 8 Deluxe for the original Switch, which currently weighs in at 11.3 GB.

Third-party game file sizes will undoubtedly be higher than those seen for launch Nintendo first-party titles, but early signs are positive. The console maker appears to have capable data compression technology in place to save on storage space. Given that the Nintendo Switch 2 will have an internal storage of 256 GB, space will be limited for those who don’t expand to an SD Express card.

During the recent Switch 2 Direct presentation, Nintendo shared some of the hardware specs players can expect to take advantage of on the upcoming console. In addition, the console maker reveled that its new hardware will hit store shelves on June 5, 2025. The aforementioned hardware features include 4K and 1440p output resolution, 120 Hz refresh rate, 3D audio, 120 Hz handheld display, HDR handheld display, 256 GB internal storage,, modern SD Express card for storage expansion, both Joy-Cons usable as mouse, and the right Joy-Con C button for social features.
