The Nintendo Switch successor, dubbed Switch 2, will not launch during Nintendo’s current fiscal year, based on the latest report.

During the latest episode of The GamesIndustry.biz Microcast, host Chris Dring stated that no developer he has spoken to so far expects the Nintendo Switch 2 to launch during the company’s current financial year. He further added that they have been told not to expect it in this financial year. That said, some people he spoke to hope that the console will launch sometime during the April/May, 2025, period, suggesting that it will sill be released early next year, not late.

Additionally, Bloomberg’s Takashi Mochizuki mentioned that earlier rumors had indicated a Nintendo Switch 2 launch as early as in March, 2025, though, recently, there were fewer and fewer people who considered the console’s release during that period a realistic possibility.

Going by Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa’s recent statement regarding the Switch 2 announcement happening before the end of the current fiscal year ending in March, 2025, a launch within the same fiscal year does seem unlikely. In his statement, Furukawa highlighted that it will have been over nine years since Nintendo announced the existence of the original Switch back in March, 2015.

An earlier report from Nikkei had stated that Nintendo may launch its new console as early as March, 2025. According to the report, the console maker has prioritized streamlining the initial sales of the Nintendo Switch 2, and giving more time to game developers to create popular first party launch titles. It also mentioned that Nintendo will attempt to expand sales of the Switch successor, by aligning marketing for its popular intellectual properties across mediums, including its games and movies. It was also said that the Nintendo Switch launched in 2017 with an insufficient initial shipment, resulting in shortage and widespread reselling. There was also a shortage of software for the new console, with only three Nintendo-developed titles. As per Nikkei, these are obstacles that the company is aiming to avoid with the Switch 2 launch.
