The PS5 has reached lifetime sales of 46.6 million units, while Insomniac Games’ latest web-swinging adventure, Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, has sold over 5 million copies.
In its Q2 (July – September) Fiscal Year 2023 financial results, Sony Group Corporation shared that the PS5 has sold 4.9 million units in the quarter, bringing the console’s lifetime sales to a total of 46.6 million units. Additionally, developer Insomniac Games took to social media to reveal that sales of its latest open world superhero action game for the PS5, Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, have exceeded 5 million copies as of October 30, 2023.
Sony had projected sales target of 25 million units for the PS5 over the course of Fiscal Year 2023. Sales during Q1 amounted to 3.3 million units, and now 4.9 million in Q2. The console will have to sell an additional 16.8 million units in Q3 and Q4 combined to meet Sony Group Corporation’s sales projection. Strong holiday sales will be crucial in reaching this target, and the release of major titles such as Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 will play a key role in boosting the console’s sales. If the 5 million copies sales figure for Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 is any indication, things are looking promising for Sony’s current-gen console, especially with the arrival of a brand new hardware revision with the slim PS5 this month in November, 2023.
In related news, a teardown of the upcoming slim version of the PS5 showed that the revised hardware features a more streamlined and compact internal design, ranging from the motherboard to the heatsink and heatpipes. The new SSD controller and layout appears different, as one would expected, given the increased storage configuration. The power supply installed in the new PS5 is slim to fit the new console form factor. Additionally, the outer panels on the slim version of the PS5 are pulled off rather than being slid off like the panels on the original PS5.
