Sony has shared the lifetime sales of the PS5 software along with hardware today giving us a glimpse at the success that they have achieved so far.
According to the official press release, Sony has now sold through 10 million units of PS5. This is a big number because the console was released in November last year, and it launched during a tough time where it continued to remains supply-constrained as the global economy and productions face the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Despite the effect of the COVID-19 pandemic, Sony managed to achieve the impossible feat and outsold PS4, which held the record previously. The updated sales are counted as of July 18, 2021. PS5 has now sold through more than 10 million units while Sony is hoping that they can continue this momentum and outsell the first-year sales of PS4. Looking at the sales so far, it appears they are right on the money.
Another interesting update was shared regarding the software sales data for the PS5. This counts the exclusives and a multiplatform game (MLB The Show 21). Returnal, which is a brand new IP from Housemarque launched at the end of April and has sold through 560K copies. This might seem low but it was a brand new IP with rogue-like gameplay which makes it an impressive feat.
Other big hitters include Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart at 1.1 million, MLB The Show 21 at 2 million (also includes Xbox sales), and Spider-Man: Miles Morales at 6.5 million.
Due to the global semiconductor shortage, PlayStation 5 and almost every gaming console is facing a shortage which is affecting its supply as the demand remains high. Sony has acknowledged the issue with the console supply and has assured fans that they will get it sorted out, but reports suggest that it won’t be possible until 2022.
