Square Enix has shared their financial results for the year ending March 31, 2021, and there are hints of a release window for Final Fantasy XVI and more.
Final Fantasy XVI was announced at the PlayStation 5 Future of Gaming showcase. It didn’t really have any release window but the game was supposedly in development for a while. Forspoken was shown as well but didn’t get an official reveal and title until later this year. It is a brand new IP from Luminous Productions that appears to have the blessing of Square Enix CEO.
In their fiscal presentation, the company outlined its plans for 2022 and beyond. In their presentation, the company suggested that it will be focused on releasing new IPs in their next year ending on March 31, 2022. This rules out games like Final Fantasy XVI or Dragon Quest XII.
This also suggests that Forspoken will be out before April 2022. The game is a console-timed exclusive and will also release on PC. It stars Ella Balinska as the lead character and uses a new type of fast-travel mechanism that lets the player climb and teleport around various surfaces.
Final Fantasy XVI is being developed by Creative Business Unit 3 at Square Enix. They also handle development on Final Fantasy XIV MMO. While the game will be produced by Naoki Yoshida who heads the Business Unit at Square Enix, he won’t be directing it. The game director is confirmed to be Hiroshi Takai. It is an action RPG set in a brand new world ruled by crystals.
