PlayStation to Require Age Verification for Communication Features in the UK

Sony is preparing to introduce mandatory age verification for certain PlayStation features in the United Kingdom, according to emails being sent to users. The change will affect access to communication tools, including messaging and voice chat, as part of broader regulatory compliance measures.

In the email, Sony states, “As part of our compliance with global regulations, you’ll need to verify your age later this year to continue using PlayStation communication features, such as messages and voice chat.” The company adds that players who choose not to complete the process will still retain access to other services, including games, trophies, and the PlayStation Store.

The verification process is described as a one-time requirement that typically takes only a few minutes. Sony is encouraging users to complete the step in advance to avoid interruptions once the policy takes effect. “This is a one-time check and usually takes just a few minutes. Completing it ahead of time will help you continue accessing communication features when you want to use them,” the message explains.

Sony also frames the move as part of its broader safety efforts. “We are committed to creating safe, age-appropriate experiences for players and families while respecting privacy and giving players and parents meaningful control over their gaming experience,” the company said.

Reports indicate that the requirement is being applied broadly, including to accounts that have been active for many years. No exact enforcement date has been specified beyond the change taking place later in 2026.
