The Last of Us Franchise Sets a New Record With More Than 500 GOTY Awards

by Ali Haider

Naughty Dog has consistently delivered blockbuster games that have received universal critical acclaim and The Last of Us franchise is one of them.

Beginning with The Last of Us in 2013, which was released for the PS3 and then later ported to the PS4 in 2014, Naughty Dog has achieved a prestigious studio status that no one can claim in the industry aside from Rockstar Games. They continued to produce and develop games that set new industry traditions. Almost every one of their major games has been a contender for game of the year.

The Last of Us Part 2 was released in 2020 after Naughty Dog had another winner in their hand with Uncharted 4 back in 2016. It has won more than 200 game of the year awards and the latest tally puts this number ahead of 250 as per GameAwards, awards tracking website.

The two games combined have now more than 500 game of the year awards in their name. Here is a tally of the awards that they have won so far.

  • TLOU (2013)
    • Media Outlets – 196
    • Readers’ Choice – 58
  • TLOU 2
    • Media Outlets – 166
    • Readers’ Choice – 88

This is more than any other franchise in history. Naughty Dog has received the most awards out of any studio in history with four of their games becoming the clear winner in their respective launch year. They rose to fame with Uncharted 2 in 2009 which was the most awarded game of its year.  They followed it up with TLOU in 2013 and Uncharted 4 in 2016. Finally, they released TLOU 2 in 2020 which was another game that was showered with critical praise and achieved commercial success. In total, they have managed to release critically acclaimed games that are the most awarded in their respective year at least four times by now.

Sony is currently collaborating with HBO to work on a TV series for The Last of Us. While Naughty Dog hasn’t shared any plans on whether they are continuing The Last of Us franchise, they haven’t shut down any potential sequel either unlike Uncharted 4, which was always billed as the end of Nathan Drake’s adventure.
