Gears of War Creator Weighs In on PlayStation Release, E-Day, and Game Pass

Gears of War creator Cliff Bleszinski has shared his perspective on the franchise’s expansion to PlayStation, as well as his views on its future and the broader direction of the games industry.

Speaking in an interview with The Expansion Pass, Bleszinski addressed the series appearing on platforms beyond Xbox. He said, “I don’t have any loyalty to Xbox. I’m platform agnostic. If Sony had given us the same amount of marketing and clout, we would have been on PlayStation. Business is business.” He added that the wider release ultimately benefits the franchise, noting that “the more people that get to experience it, the merrier.”

On the upcoming Gears of War E-Day, Bleszinski expressed optimism about the project’s return to a darker tone. He pointed to the emphasis on narrative and atmosphere, stating that revisiting the core relationship between Marcus and Dom is “the right call.” He also praised the shift back toward the Locust as a central threat, suggesting it restores tension and identity to the series.

Bleszinski highlighted the emotional resonance of recent footage, remarking that “the possibilities for cinematic moments are tremendous with what they’re doing,” while also noting that the portrayal of a more desperate and grounded world aligns well with the franchise’s roots.

Beyond Gears, he also commented on Microsoft’s Game Pass model and the state of the industry. “Microsoft with Game Pass is gunning to be the Netflix of gaming, and it’s somewhat worked out for them,” he said, while cautioning that rising costs across entertainment mean companies must continue to deliver strong value.

He added that the AAA market has become increasingly competitive, comparing it to earlier trends in the mobile space where a small number of titles dominate revenue. In contrast, Bleszinski said he now finds himself drawn more toward smaller, experimental projects, citing indie titles as the experiences he enjoys most.
