Final Fantasy XV sales have hit more than 9.5 million copies worldwide. The game was originally released back in November 2016.
The new sales update comes from a Japanese magazine. It was reported back in February 2021 but somehow went unnoticed until Twitter user Lucelid shared the news.
The article that mentions the sales update confirms that as of February 2021, the game has sold 9.5 million copies worldwide. It is available for PC (where it sold more than 1 million according to SteamSpy) and PS4 and Xbox One.
Square Enix hasn’t released a current-generation upgrade for the game, although I do feel it is ripe for the potential to get a proper upgrade. If they do it, then the sales of the game might be bolstered further propelling it to the top 3 best-selling games in the series.
In case you are curious, here are the top 3 best-selling Final Fantasy games that are not online MMO.
- Final Fantasy VII
- Final Fantasy X
- Final Fantasy VIII
Final Fantasy XV currently ranks fourth and is followed by Final Fantasy XIII. While these games have sold millions of copies, Square Enix has always said that the most profitable Final Fantasy for them has been the online MMOs including Final Fantasy XI and XIV.
The next game in the series is Final Fantasy XVI and it is set to arrive exclusively on the PS5. There is still no release date set for the game but a leak from the Geforce Now database suggests that the PC version will launch in 2023.
Luminous Productions worked on this entry in the series and their next project is Forspoken, which is set to arrive in Spring 2022 for the PS5 and PC.
