Dragon Quest series creator Yuji Hori has started work on Dragon Quest XII, which will be another brand new mainline game in the series. The preparations for the development of this project are underway.
Square Enix released Dragon Quest XI in the Western market last year. They had already released it in the Japanese market where it launched in July 2017. It was localized and released for the Western market almost one whole year later, in September 2018. After the release of Dragon Quest XI, the next game is Dragon Quest Builders 2 which is out later in July.
Square Enix recently held an event where they announced Dragon Quest Walk. It was at this announcement event that the Dragon Quest series producer, Yuu Miyake mentioned Dragon Quest XII.
“By the way, about Dragon Quest XII, which I’m sure is on everyone’s mind—[Yuji] Horii and I are currently making preparations on series developments that will connect to XII, ” said Miyake during the announcement. “I think it’s still too early, but we would like announce it in some form, so please wait a little while longer.”

This has officially confirmed the status of Dragon Quest XII now all left is a formal announcement. This is not the first time the Dragon Quest development team has revealed a new game. In the past, they similarly dropped the announcement of Dragon Quest XI in June 2014 and it was released just three years later in Japan.
